Cancellieri Demonstrates Glimpses of Brilliance in Bright Spot for Unstable Lazio

The feeling at the Stadio Olimpico was decidedly gloomy this past Saturday. Lazio were trailing against Torino, an opponent that had let in 10 goals while scoring only two in their most recent five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were concluding their ongoing dissent in an ongoing feud with chairman Claudio Lotito.

A Season Unraveling?

Was the team's progress coming unstitched, or was there ever a binding element keeping it intact in the first place? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri as manager this summer, before he to later acknowledge that the board had failed to disclose a registration embargo they were about to receive for fiscal problems. Rumours that he could resign were not true, but he did say that Lotito had "swindled" him.

The Roman club were just as chaotic during matches as off the field, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in the rest of their initial five matches, which included the capital clash. From one game to the next, it's been difficult to tell if they're getting better or collapsing.

Cancellieri's Surprising Comeback

At least one man kept smiling throughout. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to feature for Lazio this year. He completed last season on loan at Parma and, during the summer break, his owning club were attempting to stay there for another season. The transfer ban led to a change of plans. Lazio could not afford to thin their squad lacking backup options.

He joined initially during Sarri's previous tenure, at that time a 20-year-old graduate of Verona's academy. He made 20 league appearances in Lazio colors in that campaign, the vast majority of those coming off the bench. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended at the end of that season, later stated Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri had superstar potential then never playing him."

Uncovering His True Position

Perhaps the manager was persistently working to determine the exact type of Cancellieri's abilities. Originally described as a wide forward when he joined, Cancellieri instead found himself the majority of that term as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile at No 9. Across 63 games while playing for Empoli and Parma in the past two years, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
