Critical Role Season Four Unveils the Soldiers Group

Since the launch of Campaign 4, recently appointed game master Brennan Mulligan has maintained audience suspense with rich lore, a colorful mix of characters, and a gripping narrative featuring angels, demons, and dark forces expanding in strength within Dol-Makjar.

Warning: Key plot points for the latest installment of this adventure lie ahead.

The Combat-Oriented Party Introduced

The third episode concluded with a dramatic pause and introduced the premier party of characters who will split off from the main group to embark on their separate journey, distinct from the remaining groups.

The Soldiers table includes Teor (played by Travis), the nimble rogue (Laura), Tyranny (Whitney Moore), Wicander Halovar (Sam), and Kattigan Vale (Robbie Daymond).

Why Split the Party?

Given an extensive roster, it was obvious from the beginning that maintaining everyone at one table would be impossible.

Hence, the first four episodes of this story serve as an Overture, intertwining the characters’ stories before splitting into three smaller tables: Warriors, Planners, and Questers.

The Nature of the Soldiers Table

According to the DM, the Soldiers table is for adventurers who enjoy a classically intense battle-oriented story mode where non-violent answers are rare.

At first glance, characters like the reluctant priest the cleric might appear out of place, but the events of the latest installment make it clear why these specific adventurers are perfectly fit for the warrior group.

Why They Must Go

For one thing, the team knows exactly where to proceed after a violent first encounter with The Crow Keepers.

Casimir of Thjazi—whose death started the campaign’s events—manipulated the enemy for his own means, entering the hidden lair, striking the rogue, and stealing all the magical artifacts to dispose of.

The traitor then paid off his liabilities and escaped to a fortified location in Gormalay, Timmony, beyond the city, with Teor’s brother pursuing him.

Personal Motivations

Secondly, each adventurer has a individual motive to leave the city the urban setting:

  • The rogue, as the close ally and closest confidant, desires retribution.
  • The knowledgeable figure knows the region and cautions that it is a dangerous environment.
  • The strong character and The cleric, having resisted his family’s wishes to kill the fighter and instead rescued him, have no other options.
  • However, their status as important members in the powerful family could assist the party enter places they usually can’t.
  • Additionally, The grateful character pledged a unbreakable promise to The cleric for his deliverance and will now go with him everywhere.

Pursued by Authorities

Lastly, all of them are sought by the rulers that control the setting for a variety of reasons, making staying in the city no longer safe:

  • The rogue and The character are recognized lawbreakers.
  • The warrior and Wicander turned against the influential house and the horde of evil beings they are partnered with.
  • The target is wanted dead by the clan.

This leaves them few options but to travel to Timmony in pursuit of the traitor.

Upcoming Developments

From the recent installment’s post-show segment, we find out that the warrior group will be absent in the upcoming installment, leaving the other eight players to round up the Explorers and Schemers tables.

Viewers can look forward to discovering which players will be in which group in Campaign 4’s last Overture episode, available to watch on October 24.
