No fewer than 13 individuals killed and ninety-eight hurt in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's flagship government projects.

The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.

“We will rigorously clarify the cause of this accident,” declared the national leader.

The leader announced that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The official stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose time in office finished the year before. This project was closely associated with his administration's economic agenda for the southern region.

Another massive train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to revitalize the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The development of both rail lines was supervised by the army, marking a notable increase of its duties in national projects. They were built at an rapid speed, surpassing expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also sparked ongoing questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This involves an earlier crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a primary political opposition demanded an prompt pause in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This pause was requested pending a full safety audit. The party declared that the tragedy "calls for immediate answers."

In reaction, the head of state insisted that the train had been running in complete accordance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and management of these national initiatives.
