Users Stopping Anti-Obesity Medications Regain Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

New research suggests that patients who stop using new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds far faster than those who halt traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Published data in a major health publication shows that while obese people frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"People buying such treatments should be cognizant of the danger of rapid weight regain when the medication concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about a year and a half.

Analyzing Treatments

The study, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Scientists note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a slower weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Explaining the Rapid Rebound

Experts believe the mode of action of the drugs explains the amplified regain.

These medications mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal might result in the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Disease?

The NHS advise the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians argue that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the therapy might need to be long-term.

This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "emphasize the persistent nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Experiences

Individuals who have come off the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if a switch that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," recalled an individual.

This difficulty is compounded if patients have not established lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Significant Interest

Survey data suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest being substantial.

  • Adoption is higher among women compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts emphasize that while these medications are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss relies on combined lifestyle management.
